Why Is My Garage Door So Noisy?

Repair service from Overdoors of Florida in Southwest Florida

You pull in after a long day and the garage door greets you with a screech, a rattle or a loud grinding. It is annoying, and it can be embarrassing at 6 a.m. when the neighbors are asleep.

A noisy door is also a clue. Something is dry, loose or wearing out, and the noise is the door telling you. Most causes are simple. Here is how to read the sounds, what you can safely do, and when to call us.

What the sound is telling you

Different noises usually point to different problems.

  • Squeaking or screeching: dry hinges or rollers.
  • Rattling or clanking: loose screws, bolts or brackets.
  • Grinding or scraping: worn rollers rubbing the track, or a tired opener.
  • Popping or banging near the top of the door: a problem with the springs. Do not touch these.
  • Straining or loud humming from the opener: worn gears or a motor working too hard.

Worn rollers, tired hinges and loose hardware

Your door moves up and down every day, so its rollers and hinges take a beating. Worn rollers vibrate and scrape against the track. Hinges can loosen and wear at the pivot point, which makes a clank each time the door moves.

The door also shakes itself a little with every trip, and that vibration slowly loosens nuts, bolts and screws. Rattling usually means something has worked itself loose.

What you can do:

  • Look at the hinges and track brackets for anything wobbly.
  • Snug up loose screws on the hinges and track brackets with the right size wrench or screwdriver. Snug is enough. Do not overtighten.
  • Never touch the brackets at the bottom corners of the door, or anything attached to the springs or cables. They are under heavy tension.

If the rollers look worn, cracked or wobbly, or the track is bent, let a technician replace them. The bottom rollers are connected to that high-tension hardware, so this is not a job to try at home.

Lubrication done right

Friction is a big noise-maker, and Florida's humidity makes dry, rusty hinges more common than you would think. A little lubricant goes a long way.

  • Use a garage-door-rated silicone or lithium lubricant, not a general-purpose household spray.
  • Put a thin coat on the hinges and the roller bearings.
  • Wipe off any extra so it does not collect dust.
  • Wipe the tracks clean with a rag instead of oiling them.
  • Leave the springs to a professional, who can lubricate and inspect them safely.

Doing this a few times a year is plenty. Near the coast, where salt air speeds up wear, a little more often does not hurt.

The opener and the seals

Sometimes the door is fine and the noise comes from the opener. Worn gears, a stressed motor or a lack of lubrication inside the housing can cause grinding and whirring. Chain-drive openers are naturally louder than belt-drive and wall-mount models, so if the noise bothers you every day, a quieter opener may be the real fix. Look at our garage door openers for the options.

Worn weatherstripping can also add to the noise, since it lets outside sound, heat and humidity into the garage. If the rubber seal at the bottom looks cracked, flat or pulled loose, it is time to replace it.

When to call a professional

A little tightening and lubricant fixes many noisy doors. Call us if:

  • The noise is still there after you have lubricated and checked the hardware.
  • You hear grinding or screeching that keeps getting worse.
  • The door shakes, lifts unevenly, or moves in jerks.
  • You hear a loud bang, or the noise seems to come from the top of the door.
  • The opener struggles to lift the door.

Springs and cables are under extreme tension, and no homeowner should handle them. Our garage door repair team finds the cause and fixes it safely.
